The Language Connection At Southwest School |
| |
Early Literacy Class Reduction Reading Recovery
Language Arts is connected to everything we do at Southwest School. The connection of reading to our everyday activities and programs is meaningful and fun!
Children who are read to become better readers. There are several ways that parents and reading partners can support children trying to read:
- wait for the reader to try
- check the picture
- go back and read it again
- ask: does it make sense? does it sound right? does it look right?
It is important to make reading together enjoyable, and it should be done on a consistent basis.
Also, writing and reading go hand-in-hand. Here are some ideas to keep kids writing over the summer:
- keep a summer journal
- draw pictures and write stories about them, these can then be made into a book!
- make labels for places/items around the house (ie. 'chair' 'file cabinet')
- read street and restaurant signs, practice spelling them
- write letters/words in sand, shaving cream, sidewalk chalk, fingerpaint, etc.
