The original location of Torringford School was the corner of Torringford St. and East Main St. facing Rt. 202 which is now the site of the Mobil Station.  The wood frame building, was built circa 1889:  according to the "The Growth Years", Torrington 1852-1923 by Bess and Merrill Bailey p.76:

 

      "Schools kept pace in the public eye.  Having provided adequateschool 

       housing in Torringford and the Borough in 1889, the School Committee

       would turn its attention to a suitable plant at Cook's Bridge"

 

Torringford School had only four grades and each grade had a row of (approx.) 10 seats.  The seats never filled up.

Torringford Elementary School is an existing one story facility of about 62,600 gross square feet.  It was constructed in 1950 and additions were made in 1969 and 1988.  Construction consists primarily of load bearing interior and exterior walls with cast in place concrete floor and wood frame construction. 

 

 

  1987 - 1988  Torringford School received the Excellence in Education Award.  The flag and plaque were presented to Jack Dunne, Principal, Nellie Crowston, 3rd Grade Teacher, and Louis Esparo, Superintendent of Schools, in Washington, D.C. on September 14 & 15, 1988.

 

 

Torringford Elementary School had ten relocatable classrooms attached to a core builing in 1989.  The core building has seventeen classrooms spaces, some of which are smaller spaces lused for specialized/supportive learning programs.
