The Family Resource Center (FRC) at Vogel-Wetmore Elementary School is a school based family support and prevention program. The FRC at Vogel-Wetmore provides a link between families, the school, and the community. It is often the single point of entry for families in need of support services and child care options. Over the past 5 years, the FRC has gained considerable presence in the community. The FRC convenes numerous early childhood initiatives in Torrington such as the School Readiness Council and the Early Childhood Discovery project. These initiatives are creating awareness amoung parents and educators in the community. In light of the No Child Left Behind Act and efforts to move towards univeral preschool education the FRC will play a greater role in the Torrington community.

The Connecticut Family Resource Center Model offers the following seven components:

Full-Time Preschool Child Care, in which we collaborate with Forest Court Head Start in Torrington to provide comprehensive preschool services. School -Age Child Care, which runs before and after school at Vogel-Wetmore School for working parents.  Families-in-Training, which consists of weekly parent/child playgroups for children, ages 0-5, home visitation, child development screenings, and other early childhood support services. Adult Education, which we collaborate with Foothills Adult Education to provide ESL, GED, and other adult education courses. Support and Training for Family Day Care Providers, which helps to strengthen and support the early care and education services offered by community childcare providers.  Positive Youth Development, which consists of our after school enrichment clubs, D.A.R.E., School Buddies Mentoring Program, Family Literacy Nights and other positive youth activities.  Additionally, the FRC is a vital Resource and Referral Service that connects families to needed community resources and provides parenting/early childhood information to all families in the community.
