Eligibility Regulations

Spring Physicals
All athletes who intend to try out for Spring Sports need to have updated physicals that cover their spring sport season. We are encouraging all individual who plan to participate in Fall athletics as well as all current 7th graders to take the Spring Physical. Please be sure the parent's side of the sports physical form is completed and bring it with you. These forms can be picked up in the Main Office at Torrington High School.

***********************************************************
No athlete may practice or play without an updated health physical. This physical must have been given within the one calendar year of the conclusion of the season of participation. The athletic trainer must have posession of a copy of such physical in order for an athlete to tryout or practice with a team.

Eligibility Requirements for THS
(See #11 to download physical form)

1. To be eligible for fall sports or performance groups, a pupil must have received credit toward graduation at the close of the school year preceding the contest/event in at least four (4) Carnegie Units of work or its equivalent for which he or she has not previously received credit. "Equivalent" is any number of courses which are equal to one Carnegie Unit.

2. A pupil cannot at any time represent a school unless taking at least five(5) quarter Carnegie Units of work or its equivalent. During the school year a pupil must have received a passing mark in at least four (4) quarter Carnegie Units of work or its equivalent at the end of the regular marking period preceding the season. Independent studies do not qualify as course work for co-corricular participation.

3. If computer, arena, or hand scheduling assigns an athlete fewer than five (5)quarter Carnegie Units or equivalent of work in a marking period, that student is ineligible unless additional courses needed are added to the schedule.

4. Incomplete grades are not considered as passing grades. Independent studies do not count towards Carnegie Units.

5. Marking period grades (not semester grades) are to be used in determining scholastic eligibility to participate in interscholastic athletics during any given marking period. The final academic grade average determines fall eligibility.

6. The pupil must have been in membership at a secondary school for at least twelve (12) school weeks immediately preceding the time of participation, or regularly admitted from an elementary, middle, or junior high school within ten (10) school days from the opening of the succeeding school term.

7. The pupil shall not have reached his or her nineteenth (19th) birthday, except that a player who reaches his or her nineteenth (19th) birthday on or after July1 shall be eligible to compete during the remainder of the school year if he or she is otherwise eligible.

8. No pupil who has been enrolled in grades 10, 11, or 12 inclusive in any school (member or non-member) shall participate in the same branch of athletics for more than three (3) seasons.

9. A student who transfers from a school to a CIAC member school during grade 10, 11, or 12 without at the same time changing legal residence to another school district or school service area, or satisfying at least one year (365 days) of approved membership before being eligible for interscholastic competition in the same sport in which he or she was a participant in the present or preceding season during grades, 10, 11, or 12 on the junior varsity or varsity team. (Legal residence is defined as location of legal guardian.)

10. Senior athletes who want to participate in Division I or Division II sports are required to complete the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse form. Forms are located in the Guidance Office.

11. A student wishing to participate in any sport must have a current sports physical signed by a physician. Physicals are good for one year from date of signing. The doctor's form can be downloaded by clicking here.

12. A student athletic may not play or practice with an outside team in the same sport while a member of the school team after the first scheduled game of the season. (Rule II.E.) The exception to the Rule II.E. shall be:
a) Participation in parent-child tournaments and caddy tournaments.
b) Swimming, tennis, and gymnastics - a pupil may practice but not compete with a non-CIAC team or as an individual during the season as long as such practices do not interfere with or replace member school practices.

13. A student may not play under an assumed name on an ourside team. (Rule II.F.)

14. A student may not receive personal economic gain for participation in any CIAC sport. (Rule II.F.)

15. To be eligible for fall sports, a pupil must have received credit toward graduation of at least four (4) credits during the previous school year. (Rule I.A.)

NOTE: Marking period grades (not semester grades) are to be used in determining scholastic eligibility for participation in interscholastic athletics during any given marking period.
