As per BOE Attendance Policy 6006, "Every student at the high school level has a right to a hearing with the Attendance Appeal Board regarding any failure based upon absences. In order to request a hearing, the student or parent/guardian should contact the school principal in writing. The deadline for a Quarter 3 Attendance Appeal hearing is Mary 3rd. No requests will be accepted after that date. Students should bring all documentation and explanations of absences with them to the hearing. If a student signs up to appeal and fails to attend the hearing, the appeal shall be denied. To be eligible for the appeals process, students must continue classroom responsibilities and attend class faithfully.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Torrington High School Class of 2013:
The evening you have all been waiting for is fast approaching. On June 23, 2013, promptly at 6:00 p.m., we will begin our processional into the Warner Theatre for the 2013 graduation ceremonies. This is an exciting and solemn occasion which celebrates the successful completion of graduation requirements by your child. This ceremony will be the culminating memory of high school. We ask you to assist us in maintaining the dignity of this occasion by supporting the following:
Graduates must arrive at the Warner Theatre no later than 5:15 p.m. If graduates are not in line at check-in time, they will be marked a “no-show” and not have their names called.
Graduates must present themselves to the community as mature and dignified young adults. Accordingly,
- Graduates should dress appropriately. Gentlemen should wear dress shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. Ladies should wear a dress or skirt/top and dress shoes.
- Graduates are not to attach anything to the gown or cap (corsage, pin, any decorations) or are not to write on the cap.
- Graduates are not to have food, beverages, gum, balloons, silly-string, etc. in the Warner Theatre.
- Graduates may have jubilant noise after the ceremony in front of the Warner Theatre.
Any student who earns the requisite credits and fulfills the Board of Education attendance requirements is entitled to receive a diploma. It is not a guaranteed right, however, that any student who fulfills those requirements participate in the graduation ceremony. Inappropriate behavior prior to or during the ceremony may cause a graduate to be excused from participation.
Each graduate will receive four tickets (three tickets on the floor, one ticket in the balcony). Children 18 months or older require a ticket to attend the ceremonies. No standing in the aisles will be permitted. In order to ensure equitable access for all graduates, extra tickets will be distributed through a lottery system. All graduates will be entered into the lottery. The lottery will be held at the graduation rehearsal on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.
The graduation ceremony is a ritual founded in tradition. We look forward to an evening filled with pride, joy, and wonderful memories.
Sincerely,
Joanne R. Creedon, Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians/Families/Students of the Class of 2013,
As we move into the last part of this final year at THS, we share the excitement and the anticipation of year-end activities. We continue to hold all students, and especially our seniors, to the expectations of respect, safety, and responsibility. Year-end activities are privileges extended to students in good standing and participation is not an inalienable right.
This is a good time to have family conversations about safe behaviors and good decision-making:
- Many of our seniors have joined, or will be joining, Facebook groups for the college they plan to attend in the fall. Do you know that college admissions counselors screen their admitted students for provocative postings regarding alcohol, drug use, and other illicit behavior on a regular basis? They look for photos and postings that are inappropriate and have denied students admission and/or scholarship money as a result. Please be aware of how this can impact you and always be careful to conduct yourself in an appropriate manner.
- The THS Prom is an event that is the result of years of fund-raising and planning and I am proud to report that in recent years it has been a fun and safe experience for all who attend -- the many students who go with a group of friends, as well as those who have a date. A post-prom trip to the beach is NOT a sanctioned THS activity and poses serious risks. Do not believe that “everyone is doing it”.
- THS does not recognize any day as “Senior Skip Day”.
- For teens, the Centers for Disease Control offer the following advice for staying safe and protecting yourself from everything from abuse to unintended pregnancy:
- Plan ahead for safety: Tell family what your plans are ahead of time. Make an agreement with friends to keep a check on each other during the evening. Be sure someone you trust is available for you to call if your plans change or you need help.
- Remember that you don’t need a date to have fun: Whether you plan to go with a date, with friends or on your own, the point is to have a good time. Going with a group or meeting friends at the event can be just as fun as going with one special person.
- Just say no: Some people feel pressured to drink, smoke, use drugs or have sex on prom night by friends or the media. However, drinking is responsible for over 4,500 deaths among young people each year and is associated with other problems, like sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and may result in being harmed or harming others. Just because others do something doesn’t make it a good idea or right for you. It’s OK to say no.
- Respect yourself: Dating abuse is a very real issue for many people. The abuse can be verbal, emotional, physical or sexual. Respect yourself and others, avoid alcohol and drugs and tell family or call 9-1-1 if you or someone you know is being abused.
- Know before you go to after-parties: If you plan to go to an after-prom party, be sure it is adult supervised and has an observed start and end time. Go with a buddy to ensure each other’s safety.
Wishing all a successful, safe, and fun final weeks at THS! I look forward to shaking hands with every graduate on the stage of the Warner on June 23rd!
Sincerely,
Joanne R. Creedon

Dear Students, Parents, Families,
This morning, the Torrington Police Department conducted a canine search of hallway lockers and vehicles in the student parking lot at the request of the administration of Torrington High School in the interest of promoting a safe school environment.
The overall concept of the canine search is to ensure and promote the safety and welfare of the students and faculty at Torrington High School. Torrington Police Department, and assisting canine teams, conducted this at the request of school administrators. The police mission is to assist the high school in promoting the safety and welfare of all those attending or working within the school. Recently we have had students charged with the possession of marijuana on school grounds, and students have admitted to smoking marijuana prior to entering school.
Just prior to the commencement of the search, I notified the school community over the master PA system that the school was conducting a canine search of lockers and that all students were to remain in class during the period; instruction was to continue as planned. Once the canine search was underway, I informed those parents registered in PowerSchool that this was a planned event, via a “Power Announcement” , in order to alleviate concerns. Period Two (2) today, 8:20-9:36 a.m., was chosen because it is a 76 minute period. Movement during this time period is predictable and selection of this time slot would ensure that students were not interfering with the canine search. Any search of lockers and subsequent questioning of students, if necessary, was to be conducted by school personnel.
Advance notice of this was provided to you in the letter I sent home on September 5, 2012:
“Please note: The use of all school property, including lockers, are the property of the Board of Education and remain under direct supervision of the Principal and may be inspected at any time, whenever there is a question concerning the health and safety of students and faculty. Therefore, in conjunction with the Torrington Police Department, canine searches of lockers and public areas may be conducted throughout the school year.”
Thank you for your support of our continuing efforts to promote safety, respect, and responsibility at Torrington High School. The results of today’s canine search were negative. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please email or call me.
Sincerely,
Joanne R. Creedon
Estimados estudiantes, padres y familias:
Sinceramente,
Joanne R. Creedon

Dear Students, Parents, and Families:
This letter accompanies the Quarter 3 Report Card. As we move forward toward the end of the school year, it is my hope that every student will put forth his/her best effort in this last quarter. Individual commitment to personal goals – whether academic, athletic, musical, theatrical, service, and/or personal – will continue to be the source of individual and family pride, as well as school and community pride.
Look for information on an upcoming Community Conversation on: Health, Safety & Legal Rights of Students. Specific topics will include: Legal Issues Surrounding Cyber Bullying, CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities; Rights of Students, Juvenile Court; Parenting the Adolescent Child, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital; Healthy Relationships, Susan B. Anthony Project; Legal Issues Surrounding Statutory Rape, Torrington Police Department. There will be breakout sessions for further discussion with the presenters.
There are still many opportunities for THS students to show off their talents. We encourage you to come out and support our students:
April 25th District Band Concert THS Gym
May 2nd -5th Spring Musical: Godspell
May 9th -11th Spring Musical: Godspell
May 23rd Farewell Concert Warner Theater
Almost daily: Spring Athletics events
Reminders:
As per BOE Attendance Policy 6006, “Every student at the high school level has a right to a hearing with the Attendance Appeal Board regarding any failure based upon absences. In order to request a hearing, the student or parent/guardian should contact the school principal in writing. The deadline for a Quarter 3 Attendance Appeal hearing is May 3rd. If a student signs up to appeal and fails to attend the hearing, the appeal shall be denied. To be eligible for the appeals process, students must continue classroom responsibilities and attend class faithfully.
To excuse an absence for a legitimate reason, parents must call the day of the absence and follow up with documentation within 48 hours of student’s return to school.
Appropriate dress demonstrates respect for self and others. As we head into warmer weather, please be sure your child is appropriately dressed for school. Bare shoulders, plunging necklines, bare midriffs, and short shorts/skirts might be perfect for the beach but not for school. Parents will be called to bring appropriate clothing if necessary.
As always, contact me with questions/concerns/suggestions. Come to the monthly Principal’s Coffee on the 1st Monday of the month at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Changing of the Executive Board for THS PTO: Our PTO is a little different from other schools, with not as many fundraisers, not as much to do, but we need a voice. After 5 years of service, PTO officers Kathi Peterson, Anthony Lopez and Joni Ellsmore are not returning. The time has come as their children are graduating! Some of the accomplishments of the PTO are the cleanup and landscaping around the Little Theater, murals around the theater, new signs, teacher appreciation lunch for the very first time, supporting THS hosting of District History Day, and two scholarships for seniors! We are very proud of all we have done and it’s time to pass the touch. If you are interested call Kathi Peterson at 860-482-6636 or email her at twingles95@sbcglobal.net.

Estimados Estudiantes, Padres y Familias:

Dear Students/Parents/Families:
Last Friday I addressed the students regarding recent events which put Torrington High School and the community in the spotlight. It is obvious that we will continue to be under the magnifying glass, with our actions and words under scrutiny for the nation and world to see. Individually, it is up to each of us to make the right choices and do the right things. Collectively, we must work together to make our school safer and stronger and better than it was. We must demonstrate achievements, acts of kindness, and service to the community.
It should now be crystal clear that social media is not private communication but a public forum. In all posts, check yourselves: Is what I am about to say true? Is what I am about to say kind? Is what I am about to say helpful? If you cannot say yes to all 3 of these questions, DO NOT POST IT. I encourage all of you to have family conversations and consider closing down accounts -- for the safety of all.
As we spring into a new season, there are a number of topics to update/remind you:
Our Kids, Our Homes, Our Community – Panel discussion on Wednesday, April 3rd 5-6 p.m. at THS: a family-friendly dialogue on underage drinking, drug use, and keeping teens safe. All students and parents/families should plan on attending this together. The panel includes:
Mark R Prete, MD, FACEP
Chief Medical Officer, Charlotte Hungerford
Hospital and Emergency Physician
Paul Mahler, LCSW
McCall Foundation Clinical Director
Lt. Mike Emanuel
Torrington Police Department
Judge Thomas Upson
Juvenile Matters Courts, Torrington

There will be sign-ups outside each teacher’s door on the 3rd and 4th for 10 minute time slots. If you feel you need a lengthy discussion, please arrange for an alternate meeting date.
APPROPRIATE DRESS
As we head into warmer weather, please be sure your child is appropriately dressed for school. Bare shoulders, plunging necklines, bare midriffs, and short shorts might be perfect for the beach but not for school. Parents will be called to bring appropriate clothing, if necessary. - Consequence: Six “unexcused” absences in any one quarter will result in a grade of 60 (failure) for that quarter.
The principles of safety, respect, and responsibility guide us in our decision-making and in our conversations with students. As always, contact me with questions/concerns/suggestions. Come to monthly Principal’s Coffee on 1st Monday of the month at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (April 1st at 9:00 a.m. only)

Estimados Estudiantes/Padres/Familias:
Mark R Prete, MD, FACEP
Chief Medical Officer, Charlotte Hungerford
Hospital and Emergency Physician
Paul Mahler, LCSW
McCall Foundation Clinical Director
Lt. Mike Emanuel
Torrington Police Department
Judge Thomas Upson

A Message from the Principal
March 22, 2013
Dear Students,
Torrington High School is in the spotlight, but sadly for the wrong reasons -- allegations of violent criminal acts and subsequent cyber expressions of hurtful, irresponsible, and grossly insensitive remarks that reflect a total disregard for victim rights have flooded the media. All of this is counter to what this school strives to be: a community of learners, bound by principles of respect, responsibility and safety, and a community which believes in Raider Pride as an everyday way of life.
As I was composing this message last night, I was thinking of the hundreds of you who come into the school every day determined to do your best, challenging yourselves with classes, or your sport, or your instrument, or your acting, or your community involvement and service. You care about each other, and are respectful of each other and the adults who work with you. I was thinking of the hardworking and dedicated faculty and staff who put their heart and soul into you, the students of THS. I was thinking of your parents, who want the best for you and expect the best from us. I was thinking of the people of the city who pay their taxes to fund our schools so that you can have a future of your own making and be the generation that does, in fact, make the world a better place. For everyone’s sake, we need to get that spotlight on the good.
This is a difficult time for THS, but what is clear to me is that now is the time for us to band together and make our school safer and stronger and better than it was. We must stand up for what is right, and speak up against wrong. Just last month, the winter theater production All of Us delivered this same message, eloquently and effectively. We need to make sure that spotlight is on us for your achievements large and small, for your acts of kindness, and for your service to the community. For those of you who do this every day -- and there are hundreds of you -- thank you. For those of you who don’t, get with the program. Do good. Let’s get that spotlight on the good.
Tonight, many of you will be demonstrating empathy and service -- two student groups have organized events to raise awareness and funds for the plight of the needy in Rwanda and Cameroon. Peacejam is sponsoring “Flick and Float” at the YMCA, and Interact is sponsoring the Dodgeball tournament here at the gym. Come out for one of these events, have fun, and show everyone what THS is really all about.
Those same principles of safety, respect, and responsibility must guide your use of social media. For the past two years, the Guidance Department and Health teachers have collaborated with community educators from the Susan B. Anthony Project to provide you with a variety of lessons on bullying, cyberbullying, and Internet safety. We have provided you with the knowledge and the tools. It is up to you to make the right choices.
As you go through your day today, please think about this, and do your part to make things better. Let’s get that spotlight on the good, and keep it there.
Thank you.

Sinceramente,
Joanne R. Creedon, Principal

Dear Parent/Guardian:
School safety and security continues to be our priority, and we will work on enhanced and effective school security – both facility and processes. All of the schools in TPS are undergoing a safety/security audit in the next couple of weeks. Although this process might yield new information and provide new directions for us, we are continually working on improving our safety procedures. Last week, all students were notified of the following:
- Every student needs to show ID upon entrance to the building, and upon request.
- Every staff person should wear ID at all times.
- Every substitute will get a sub lanyard upon check-in and wear while in building.
- Every worker must check in at Front Door and get visitor badge. It must be visible for the duration of visit to building.
- No student will allow another person entrance into the building.
- No doors should be propped open at any time.
- No one exiting should allow another person to enter.
We will also be requiring all visitors to buzz in, state name and reason for visit, prior to entry.
Most importantly: if you see something, say something, right away. Report any irregularities to administration, SRO.
The budget process for 2013-2014 promises to be a challenge. Although my presentation of our site budget was originally scheduled for this week’s PTO meeting, this has been postponed until after the Superintendent presents the TPS 13-14 Budget at a scheduled Special Budget Committee Meeting on February 27, 2013. I encourage your attendance at budget meetings as your schedule permits. Your participation and involvement in this process is an important contribution to our home-school partnership.
Student Attendance is paramount for student success, and this year we are diligent in our implementation of the Attendance Policy (Board of Education Policy 6006). Reminders: The school day begins promptly at 7:25 a.m. with the Student Success Period. Therefore, students should arrive at school no later than 7:20 a.m. A student’s absence should be reported by a parent or guardian by calling the Attendance Secretary at 860-489-2353 no later than 9:00 a.m. Student’s absences will be considered “unexcused” until documentation is received. Documentation should be received within 48 hours of the student’s return. Consequence: Six “unexcused” absences in any one quarter will result in a grade of 60 (failure) for that quarter. Students should monitor their own attendance records on Power School. Any student who believes there is an error in reporting should notify their teacher within 24 hours.
Project Graduation raffle tickets are due by Friday, February 15. The money and ticket stubs may be sent in an envelope with your child to their SSP teachers. The drawing for the prizes will be at the boys home basketball game at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 15. All seniors must sell their tickets to attend the event. Project Graduation is a wonderful post-graduation event for the senior class to enjoy an “all-nighter” together with good fun, good food in a safe and supervised environment.
As always, please contact me with questions, concerns or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Joanne R. Creedon

Estimados Padres/Guardianes:
Sinceramente,
Joanne R. Creedon
Dear Parents/ Families,
Safety, respect, and responsibility continue to be our buzzwords as we work to incorporate these principles into daily life at THS. Student safety is of primary importance. In our usual course of business, we review and drill for emergencies, and have protocols in place to secure our schools. The tragedy at Sandy Hook has put us all on heightened alert. School officials, including THS administration, attended a statewide symposium on school security. In the coming weeks, we will be evaluating and improving the existing school emergency plan in collaboration with district and city officials.
A key component in school safety is promoting a positive school climate of respect, connectedness, and cooperation. This is a feature of our school improvement plan, and efforts include our SSP (Student Success Plan) periods and teachers, 9th grade teams, and professional development for teachers this year with a focus on school climate. We are continuing our focus on positive behaviors with the Caught on Candid Character program which recognizes students for unsolicited acts of kindness, and we are now emphasizing a “Words Matter” campaign, not only to check student behaviors for inappropriate language, but also to encourage the following litmus test for all – in words spoken and in words printed/texted: “Is what I am about to say true? Is what I am about to say kind? Is what I am about to say helpful?” Anything you can do at home to reinforce this, especially in terms of students’ use of Twitter and Facebook, would help our efforts in this regard.
Course selection for 2013-2014 is now open for all students in grades 9 – 11. Students are expected to log on to PowerSchool and select their courses based on teacher recommendation and career interests. This online registration is open until January 25th. Information was distributed by SSP teachers, and the Course of Study for 2013-2014 and course elective sheets can be viewed online. If you have any questions about the process, contact your child’s counselor.
Good things are always happening here at THS. Last Friday, the gym was packed to the rafters and school spirit evident in support for the first "Compete for Tim Considine" fundraising event at the Torrington vs. Naugatuck boys basketball game. By the end of the night, over $6400 had been raised for the ALS Association of CT through the admission donations, raffles, and other contributions. It was an exciting game and a great night overall. The generosity of the THS community and the students of Naugatuck was incredibly impressive.
Last week, the Guidance Department hosted a College Panel. Graduates of the Class of 2012 returned to share their first semester experiences and provided some great tips to this year’s seniors including: reach out to people, work at getting along with others; learn effective studying strategies; self-advocate and seek out study groups, etc. They also reported that the teachers of THS did a good job of preparing them academically for the challenge of their college courses.
As per BOE Attendance Policy 6006, “Every student at the high school level has a right to a hearing with the Attendance Appeal Board regarding any failure based upon absences. A failing grade of 60 is the consequence for any course in which a student has 6 or more unexcused absences for that quarter. In order to request a hearing, the student or parent/guardian should contact the school principal in writing.”
The deadline for a Quarter 2 Attendance Appeal hearing is January 18th. No requests will be accepted after that date. Hearings will be scheduled for the week of January 22nd. Students should bring all documentation and explanations of absences with them to the hearing. If a student signs up to appeal and fails to attend the hearing, the appeal shall be denied. To be eligible for the appeals process, students must continue classroom responsibilities and attend class faithfully.
Parent/family involvement is integral to all of our efforts to boost student achievement and improve overall school performance. I encourage you to contact your student’s teachers if you have concerns or questions about academic progress, and come out to budget meetings, PTO meetings (1st Thursday of every month at 6:30), and Principal’s Coffees (1st Monday of every month at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.)to stay informed and participate in the discussions.
Mid-term exams begin next Friday (see detailed schedule, attached). Encourage your student to commit to a healthy dose of studying!
As always, please contact me if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Joanne R. Creedon
