    Torrington Schools Triennial Wellness Report

The Triennial Assessment for Torrington Public Schools Wellness Policy was recently completed.  Results indicate that the district has specific goals for nutrition education that are designed to promote student wellness. The nutrition education curriculum is comprehensive and teaches skills that are behavior focused, interactive, and/or participatory.

Torrington Public Schools are in compliance with all USDA nutrition standards for reimbursable school meals. All school meals are prepared by nutrition services staff that receive annual training in accordance with USDA Professional Standards. We participate in the USDA child nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) making all meals accessible to all students. Throughout the day, free drinking water is available to all students. All foods and beverages offered to students meet or exceed the USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.

The Wellness Policy identifies the officials responsible for the implementation and compliance of the existing policy.  The Wellness Committee will continue to update or modify the wellness policy every three years based on school priorities, community needs, new health science/technology, and new Federal or state guidance. All updates and changes will be made available to the public.

The Wellness Policy indicates clear goals for nutrition education however the assessment found that in practice the standards-based curriculum with specific goals is lacking.

The Wellness Policy assessment found many areas where the district is following good practices, but the Wellness Policy does not reflect that practice. The Wellness Policy will be revised in the 2022 - 2023 School year to reflect the mandatory training required for Food Service staff, the current practices around competitive food sales, fund-raisers, food marketing and Smart Snacks compliance. Torrington School's Food Service follows the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act Regulations for all food served in the schools however current policy will need to be revised to reflect this.

Through our Wellness Policy evaluation process, we identified a few areas needing focus. The Wellness Committee will want to consider assessing the following:

Increase stakeholder involvement in the Wellness Committee

Local School Wellness Policy Assessment Plan and process for sharing with the public.
