Superintendent of Schools

Mr. Michael J. Wilson

Hello to the Torrington Public School Community,

Please allow me to tell you a little about myself and my background. Personally, I am the proud father of two amazing and wonderful children. I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York where I attended Fordham University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics/Economics. After college, I was a Regional Manager for Sure Air LTD in Stamford. During my time at Sure Air, I earned my MST in Mathematics Education from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. I then embarked on my teaching career as a High School and Middle School Mathematics Teacher in the Bronx and Long Island. During this time, I also served as an adjunct Mathematics Professor at Berkeley College in Manhattan. I then relocated to Connecticut, where I earned both my Administration (092) and my Superintendent (093) degrees from Southern Connecticut State University. I am also very proud to have been published three times. Being a lifelong learner, I am currently continuing my doctoral work in Educational Law.

Professionally, I bring many types of educational experiences with me to Torrington. I have worked in both private and public schools that range in size from small to large and while there, I coached various sports such as track, softball, and basketball. I have been a classroom teacher (Secondary Mathematics grades 8-12), College Mathematics Professor, Assistant Principal, District Coordinator of Mathematics and Science, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, President/CEO of an Educational Consulting Company, and for the past two years, I have proudly served as the Superintendent of the wonderful and amazing Torrington Public Schools.

For me, it is all about our wonderful students. Our students’ learning and well-being will always be at the center of my decisions. Torrington has become my second home and it truly is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Educational Leader. Over these past two years, our students have shown a tremendous amount of growth in ELA and Mathematics. Our students have also shown a great increase in their proficiency on both district and state assessments. I am very proud of the hard work put in by our students and staff and we will continue to enhance as a TEAM. Torrington also has fantastic music, art, and extracurricular programs which have been highlighted across the state. They also have positive and healthy relationships between staff and students. I take very seriously that you have entrusted the young people of this community to our care and I am confident that our terrific TEAM will give their best day in and day out in order to support all children.

Crucial to all of our students’ success is the ability to maintain and grow a rigorous teaching and learning environment that provides every student with a sense of belonging while helping students to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. My personal mission as a Superintendent is to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and take part in making sure that the educational needs of all children in Torrington are met. I have recently had the honor and privilege of presenting at the RTM National Superintendent conference in Saint Louis and in Washington DC on student engagement and promoting student growth with tight budget constraints. It is my honor to share my experiences and do what I truly love, each and every day. Please remember to visit the district’s website at: https://www.torrington.org/ as well as our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/Torringtonschools/ in order to keep up to date on all activities and events.

The Board of Education is composed of ten wonderful and dedicated individuals who are truly a part of our TEAM and have the students’ best interest in mind with each and every decision they make. I have truly enjoyed being a part of the Torrington community these past two years, and I look forward to the continued support for our TEAM from each of you. All of our decisions will always be centered around Torrington’s wonderful students.

With great pride,

Michael J. Wilson, Superintendent
