Integrated Preschool
Torrington Public Schools is inviting 4 year old typically developing children to join our half day and full day integrated special education preschool classrooms for the 2026-2027 school year. In an integrated preschool classroom, peer models with strong language, pre-academic, and social skills learn alongside children ages 3-5 with educational disabilities, such as autism, developmental delays or a speech language impairment.
There is no cost to Torrington residents and bus transportation is provided. PreK students will ride the bus with students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Breakfast and/or lunch will be provided.
We are currently inviting typically developing children who live in Torrington and turn 4 years old between September 2, 2025 and September 1, 2026 to submit an application by March 13, 2026. Children must be fully toilet trained. A lottery will be held to select students who will be invited for a screening. If your child is selected in the lottery, you will be contacted and given a date and time for your child to be screened. If your child is not selected in the lottery, he/she can remain on a waiting list. Not all students who are invited for a screening will be selected for the program.
Program Overview:
Torrington Public Schools Integrated Special Education Preschool provides an environment that meets the needs of all learners. We create developmentally appropriate educational experiences that align with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards from the State Education Department's Office of Early Childhood. These standards are aligned with the kindergarten curriculum so that children are prepared as they move forward to elementary school. Teachers use Benchmark Ready to Advance to build knowledge and early literacy and math skills through ten thematic units. We also utilize Heggerty for phonemic awareness and Second Step for social/emotional learning. Our philosophy is that children learn best through active participation in a variety of experiences. The integrated program benefits both children with and without special education needs. This inclusive education provides an opportunity to build friendships, improve social interaction, and teaches all children to understand differences.
